Diabetes is a long-term condition in which the body cannot properly control blood sugar, and in Bangladesh the number of people affected is rising quickly, having already passed 1 crore 50 lakh according to various health research and a Prothom Alo report. According to the International Diabetes Federation, a large share of those affected (around 43–50% or more) do not know they have diabetes.
In Bangladesh roughly 1 in every 10 adults has diabetes, and 10 percent of deaths in the country are caused by it. On current trends, the number of people with diabetes in the country will reach 2 crore 23 lakh by 2045.
